How long do they stay hot? How about cold?
A: For heat, here's a secret to getting your packs to stay hotter longer: once the gel begins to react to the click, gently massage the pack to mix up the gel to all one color before applying it to the body and of course get it inside clothing, a towel or under the covers so the heat can't escape easily. Also, you'll notice that when you click them at a toasty room temperature, they will get warmer and stay warmer longer.
Note: these times are estimates under insulated conditions of the packs:
Hand Warmer: up to an hour in a good glove or pocket
Knee & Joint : 1-2 hours
Back & Abdomen: 1-2 hours
Neck & Shoulder: 1-2 hours
Again, wrap your pack in a thin towel or pillow case, use it under a blanket or clothing. Any insulation to keep the heat from escaping into the environment is good insulation. You might get double or even sometimes triple the heating time this way.
Q: How do the Click It Hot Packs work?
A: When clicking (inverting the curve of) the metal disc, a reaction is set off, causing the liquid inside to immediately crystallize and heat up to about 130 degrees.
Q: Do I need to click all the “buttons” on the larger sizes to activate them?
No. The buttons you see on the larger sizes are only there to allow for more flexibility of the pack. Activating the pack only requires clicking the single metal disc that floats around in the liquid. Hold it up and allow gravity to drop the disc into a corner, then click it.
Q: Will the Click It Hot Packs reset themselves after I am done using them?
No. To reset the packs, boil them in water until clear, until all the crystals are melted and the solution is 100% liquid again, then allow to cool to room temperature before reusing.
Q: Why is my pack rock-solid after I've finished using it?
When activating the heat pack, crystals form immediately. They remain soft for a while but as they cool down, they begin to harden. That is merely the baking soda inside seizing up as it cools. Eventually, the pack will become quite solid. To return the pack back to its liquid state, simply boil for the recommended length of time, remove it from the boiling water and let it cool. It will hold the potential energy until you decide to click it again for heat, no matter how long that is.
Q: How do I make it a cold pack?
In its liquid state, place the pack inside your refrigerator for 1-2 hours. The pack can remain in the refrigerator for an unlimited length of time without causing any damage.
Q: I like to interchange hot and cold therapy. Will clicking the coin make my pack become nice and hot right after taking it out of the fridge?
Yes. However, for the ideal heat after using it cold, allow the pack to return to room temperature first. Or always have at least two on hand.
Q: Can I place my Click it Hot Pack in the freezer to make it cold?
Yes, but only for 20 minutes or so and take care not to forget it there. If placed in the freezer much longer than that, the pack could activate itself, become hot then rapidly cool down and the crystals will become hard. PLACING IN THE FREEZER CAN CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE PACK.
Placing in the refrigerator is the ideal way to get a cold pack.
Q: I put my Click it Hot Pack in the freezer and now it’s rock solid. How do I “unfreeze” it?
The pack never actually froze in the first place (see question above). To reset your pack, simply boil in a pot of water per recommended length of time for your pack (see question below).
Q: How long should I boil my pack for?
Recommended boiling times:
Neck/Shoulder : 20 minutes
Back/Abdomen: 15 minutes
Knee/Joint : 10 minutes
Hand Warmer : 5 minutes
Time may vary depending on how much use the product has had, how long it has been since it has last been reset, etc. The above recommendations are the typical lengths of time needed. If you don't see all crystals completely boiled out, just add a minute or two as needed.
Q: I boiled my Click It Hot Pack and it is crystallizing all over again by itself. Is my pack defective?
Not necessarily. More than likely, the pack wasn’t boiled long enough (see above for recommended times), for if you leave a crystal "un-melted" it will cause the whole pack to start crystallizing again on cooling. Just boil it again until the pack is completely clear, then remove from water and allow to cool. If it continues to re-crystallize on its own after boiling, the pack may be defective. See page entitled “exchange policy”.
Q: I tried clicking the coin but it won’t work. It looked so easy when the salesperson showed it to me at the expo…
If the coin has never been clicked before, it may require several clicks to "break it in." Afterwards, simple pressure on the coin will cause the pack to activate. It requires leverage more than pressure.
To activate a pack which has never been clicked before, you will want to snap the coin similar to how you would snap a hair clip (or hair barrette). A better explanation would be to place both thumbs in the center of the coin (curved side facing up) while placing your fingers on the underneath edges of the coin. Press the tips of your thumb tips down in the dead center of the disc while pulling the edges up. This will cause the coin to invert and "click."
Q: What if one of my kids or my dog breaks it open? Are the contents toxic?
The liquid in Click It Hot Packs is basically water, vinegar and baking soda or technically, sodium acetate. Sodium acetate has many uses, one of which is to flavor the sale/vinegar potato chips you see in stores.
The outer glove of the pack is made of PVC (like the white water pipes used in houses) plastic and is BPA-free. BPA is an industrial chemical that has been used to make certain plastics since the 1960s and there are many controversial reports that BPA may pose certain serious risks to health. For this reason, we ensure that our packs are manufactured with BPA-free PVC plastic.
Click it Hot Packs are environmentally safe, non-toxic & FDA approved.
Q: Can the Click it Hot Packs puncture if poked with something sharp?
Yes. Try not to poke it with sharp things.
Q: What if there is something defective with my Click it Hot Pack but it is a
manufacturer defect?
We'll replace it for you within one year of purchase with on presentation of receipt. See page entitled “Terms of use/Replacement Request” for more information.
Q: Can I boil my Click it Hot Pack in the microwave?
No. There is a metal disc inside the pack and could cause damage if placed inside a microwave.
Q: What is inside my Click it Hot Pack?
Sodium acetate, which is a salt and vinegar solution; it is non-toxic. Furthermore, as there is no electricity involved, Click it Hot Packs are safer to use than electric heating pads.
Q: Is the temperature of the Click it Hot Packs safe? Will it burn me?
The packs will heat up to 130 degrees. This is typically a perfectly safe temperature and is the same temperature used in “hot rock” massages but you must be the judge of how much heat you can tolerate and take precaution to wrap the pack in a towel or something to lessen the intensity of the heat. It is certainly safer than an electric heating pad. Once clicked, it will not continue to get hotter but will only slowly lose heat.
Q: How many times can I use my Click it Hot Pack?
As long as you take good care of it, we don't know of an exact limit. Many of our customers claim to have used them for years. We (the owners) have personally witnessed this.
